Zoey Whittington brings home three gold medals from the Class 3A State Meet and earns Baltimore Sun first team All-Metro honors.
After a storied and well-documented high school career, it was only fitting that Comets senior Zoey Whittington ended her prep run on the type of high note she’s maintained for all four years of her years at Catonsville. Whittington’s body of work on the season, including five total gold medal finishes in the state and regional meets combined, earned her first team All-Metro honors in the Baltimore Sun. Individually at states, the senior brought home a first place finish in the 400 meter dash and snatched up a bronze in the 200 meter. The team of Whittington (who served as the anchor), senior Maria Randlett-Tydings and juniors Flaime MacDowell and Emilia Ramos captured first place in both the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relays. In total, …

Catonsville gets 22 points from Zoey Whittington, ends first half on a 12-1 run to put away visiting Bluebirds.
If you combine the first, third and fourth quarters Monday night, Catonsville only outscored a pesky Kenwood bunch by 11 points. However, unfortunately for the Bluebirds, the game consists of four total quarters, and it was during the second quarter—one in which the Comets outscored Kenwood 20-6—that Catonsville was able to flip the switch and pull away for a 59-34 win. The Comets (13-4) have now outscored their opponents 119-59 over their last two contests. Senior Zoey Whittington finished with a game-high 22 points and sophomore Deb Milani chipped in with ten as Catonsville closed out the second frame on a 12-1 spurt to take a comfortable 21-point lead heading into the break—a margin that would shrink to no less than 16 for the remainder…

Desperately looking to avenge last week's defeat at the hands of Dulaney, Catonsville explodes on a 20-0 run in the first half and breezes by visiting Gators.
It didn’t matter who was shooting, who was passing or who was handling the ball for Catonsville Saturday night—the Comets were clicking on all cylinders en route to a 60-25 thumping of Perry Hall. Even if the Comets made a rare mistake, things just seemed to work out. For example, when senior Zoey Whittington’s corner three-pointer came up well short of the rim, sophomore Deb Milani was positioned perfectly under the hoop, camped out and ready to put back the miss. Whittington, who finished with a game-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds, sparked her offense in a first half where the Comets (12-4) took a 4-4 tie two minutes into the first quarter and turned it in to a 24-4 advantage before the Gators’ (9-7) Cassidy Keller hit a …

Highlighting some of the top performers I've covered for Patch and how valuable they are to their respective teams.
So far in my column I’ve touched on the topics of hard-working referees and awe-inspiring coaches, but now I’d like to turn to your attention from those appetizers toward the main course of what I want to do as a columnist, the prime rib or Chilean sea bass (if you’re avoiding red meat as a New Year’s resolution) if you will—the players. I’m going to fill you in on a few of the standout hoopsters that I’ve covered over the past month or so that are, for lack of a better term, worth the price of admission. So instead of wasting $10 at the bowling alley or seeing Little Fockers on a Friday night, I encourage you to come check out these players. Catonsville High School senior Zoey Whittington injured her leg in the first quarter as the defending Carroll County champion Lady Cavaliers pulled away in second half.
Defending Carroll County champion South Carroll used their size and experience to defeat a short-handed Catonsville High School, Tuesday evening at the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, 49-32. Catonsville's Zoey Whittington injured her right leg while driving to the basket with a little more than 2 minutes to play in the first quarter. The senior leader required assistance to the bench from her father and a trainer and did not return. The high-energy point guard has run the team's offense all season and the Comets' struggled to pickup the pace for the rest of the game. "It's the first time in two years that we've played without our best player. When you lose your leading scorer and second leading rebounder, it forces you to do things you …

Catonsville high school's Zoey Whittington uses a strong inner passion to excel on the basketball court, track.
After suffering a close loss to two-time defending state champion Fallston a week ago, Catonsville senior Zoey Whittington could have chalked up her team's effort as a moral victory going forward. One problem. In Zoey's mindset, there are no moral victories–this senior leader simply can't stand losing. Rather then bemoan the loss and look toward the next game, Whittington–as she has been known to do–poured over every detail in her team's performance, heavily scrutinized her own play and by night's end had figured out what phases of the game the Comets would benefit from working on in their next practice. The next morning, her head coach awoke to find an e-mail awaiting him in his inbox. It was Whittington, laying out for the coach her …

Catonsville girls basketball utilizes a suffocating man-to-man defense and a dominating effort from Taylor Barton to stymie the Bulls, remain unbeaten.
In a battle between two early season unbeatens, Catonsville High School proved that intense, in-your-face defense can go a long way, holding visiting Hereford to 17 first half points en route to a 53-44 victory Friday evening. Along with a game-high 25 points from freshman forward Taylor Barton, the Comets benefited from a stifling man-to-man defense that forced Hereford into several difficult shots and a bevy of costly turnovers. Catonsville (3-0) held the Bulls without a field goal for the first four minutes in both the first and second quarter. "I thought that our defense's aggressiveness was good. Our positioning wasn't as good as we like, but I thought we played really tough," head coach Mike Mohler said after the game. "They had 17 …
