An argument between two students at the University of Maryland Baltimore County ended in one slashing the other with a knife, campus police said. The incident took place around 6 a.m. Saturday in Erickson Hall on UMBC's campus in Catonsville, Major Paul Dillon told Patch. The student was transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Dillon said. Cody Jared Kradz, 22, of Catonsville, was arrested a short time later about a mile from campus, Dillon said. Online court records indicate he has been charged with first- and second-degree assault. A K-9 unit is on the scene as the Baltimore County Police Department searches for a suspect.
Police are searching for a suspect in an armed robbery that occurred Tuesday in the 5400 block of Dolores Avenue, near the University of Maryland Baltimore County campus. The Baltimore County Police Department is at the scene, investigating, according to Julia Hardgrove, department spokeswoman. A K-9 unit is also at the scene. The call came in at 11:28 a.m., Hardgrove said. And the suspect reportedly took a victim's cash, truck keys and cell phone. There were no injuries, she said. Finding a job takes brains. But unlike the lumbering zombies of horror movie lore, University of Maryland, Baltimore County officials are hoping career week is a bit more enlightening. The university's zombie-themed career week starts Monday and runs through Thursday. UMBC's English Department recently announced that it will have a new master's degree. The new degree is a master of arts in Texts, Technologies and Literature. UMBC said in recent press release that it's going to "provide an opportunity for students to further their understanding of literature and a broad array of other texts, including digital, academic, and those we use every day." The school said it's going to be designed to accommodate students with different interests who are going on different career paths. Ideal degree candidates include those studying English Studies, high school teachers searching for advanced training or those starting in professions dealing with communications, editorial and the digital media areas. Students and parents should check on various web sites Wednesday to find out about school closings if the expected storm hits.
If the storm expected for Wednesday does actually hit the area, students often are notified, but they also can check web sites. For local public schools, Baltimore County can send out e-mails or it puts the status up on its web site. It's going to be the same situation with CCBC (Catonsville) and UMBC. These colleges put the status of how they'll be opening -- if it's late or closed -- on the front page of their websites. The storm is expected to start Tuesday night with some rain, but the big question is how much snow the area gets on Wednesday. Various predictions are saying 5-10 inches in the Baltimore metro area, depending upon a number of factors.

Mount Hebron High students were coming to the "For All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rights."
Students from at least one Baltimore-area school were scheduled to come to UMBC on Thursday to view the exhibition titled "For All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rights." A group of students from Mount Hebron High School (Howard County) are scheduled to come to the exhbit today. Two city high schools -- Digital Harbor and City College -- already have seen the exhibit. UMBC has set up trips for local high school students to come and see the exhibition and then go to a class about visual culture and social justice with a professor from the college. After that, the students create their own social justice-inspired artwork once they get back to their school. That is then going to be displayed on the UMBC campus. …

Zach Clark got the win for the Orioles in their spring training opener on Saturday.
Former UMBC pitcher Zach Clark got off to a good start with the Orioles in spring training Saturday when he earned the win in the team's first exhbition game. Clark threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning, and the game was tied 3-3 when Trayvon Robinson hit a game-winning two-run homer for Baltimore in the bottom half. That made Clark the pitcher of record, and he got the win when the Orioles held on for the 5-3 victory over the Twins. The Orioles used nine different pitchers in the game as manager Buck Showalter took a look at several players. Clark finally made the 40-man roster last fall, and it will be interesting to see what kind of a look he gets from the team. Clark graduated from UMBC in 2006 and signed with the Orioles as an …
