UMBC Men's Soccer Falls to N. Carolina in NCAAs

Retrievers lose on penalty kicks in second round against defending national champion

The UMBC men's soccer team suffered a tough loss to the defending national champion North Carolina Sunday in second round of the NCAA Men's College Cup. After upsetting Old Dominion on the road Thursday night, beating that team on penalty kicks after they played to a scoreless tie through two overtimes, UMBC went to North Carolina and played just as well. The Retrievers battled the Tar Heels to a scoreless tie through two overtimes before North Carolina edged them in penalty kicks, 3-2. This is the second time in three years that UMBC made the NCAA tournament. The Retrievers did it in 2010, upsetting Princeton on the road in the first round before losing in the second, also in penalty kicks, to William & Mary. UMBC finished this season …

Locals Steer Baltimore Blast Toward Another Title

The Baltimore Blast will host Milwaukee Friday night in Game 1 of the MISL Championship series. The game begins at 7:35 p.m. at 1st Mariner Arena.

For Mike Lookingland, there are two givens this time of year. First, the Fallston native will be pulling for Duke in the NCAA Tournament. Second, and just as passionately, the Baltimore Blast's all-league defender will be hoping the Milwaukee Wave lose in the Major Indoor Soccer League playoffs. “I don’t think I’ve ever hated anything more in my life than the Milwaukee Wave,” Lookingland said.  Lookingland and the Baltimore Blast (18-6) hosts Milwaukee (16-6) in Game 1 of the MISL Championship Series Friday night at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore. Game 2 will be played at 4 p.m. Sunday in Milwaukee. If the teams are split, a 15-minute "mini-game" will be played to determine the champ. Tickets are still available. “There’s so much bad blood…

UMBC Men's Soccer Falls to Boston U on National Television

UMBC Men's soccer Homecoming game featured on Fox Soccer Channel is ruined by America East Conference leader Boston University as the Retrievers lose 2-0 in front of 2,781 fans at UMBC Stadium.

As the UMBC men's soccer trotted out to the field on a windy Friday night at UMBC Stadium, they had all elements of having a superb home field advantage. A homecoming game in front of a national TV audience along with a  record breaking attendance of  2,781 fans which is the largest crowd to watch a UMBC men's soccer game in the school's history. Even with all of the energy and attention being focused on the Retrievers, it wasn't enough to knock off Boston University (9-3-1, 4-0-0),  as UMBC (6-4-3-, 1-1-2) lost their first America East Conference match of the season, 2-0. "We are disappointed in the result, a tremendous night, it is a night in my 20 years here it is a great accomplishment to have a game on national television," said UMBC …

Comets Soccer Cruises Past Parkville

Quick striking offense leads the way in 5-0 win

When Catonsville High School took on Parkville High School Friday afternoon, the Comets barely gave their fans a chance to take their seats before starting their offensive assault on the visiting Knights. Comet striker Jose Moran scored in the opening minute of play, setting the tone for a Catonsville varsity squad that finished with a 5-0 victory -- keeping  Knight defenders on their heels all afternoon.  Catonsville (7-1-2) would take the lead 2-0 only a few minutes later, as midfielder Brian Dingle took advantage of an out of position Parkville goalie to find the back of an empty net.  Dingle and Moran would add a goal a piece in the second half of what turned out to be an overall uncompetitive game. Defenseman James Flaherty inserted …
