U.S. Education Secretary Returning to Baltimore County for Gun Control Town Hall

Arne Duncan is slated to visit Loch Raven High School on April 10.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan is making a third trip to Baltimore County—this time to discuss gun control. "This is a topic he's been very passionate about," said Dallas Dance, superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools. Duncan will hold a town hall meeting at Loch Raven High School on April 10. A precise time has not yet been set. The secretary previously visited Perry Hall High School on Aug. 22, 2012 to discuss education reform as part of a school system professional development event. Less than a week later, Perry Hall High joined the national conversation on gun violence in schools when student Robert Gladden, 15, opened fire in the school's cafeteria, leaving a special needs schoolmate seriously injured. Gladden pleaded…

Comment: '35 Years with Big Bubba Won’t Fix This'

Baltimore-area Patch readers speak their minds.

Owings Mills-Reisterstown: “Mimi was a very nice lady and my wife and I loved her very much. On another site's article I saw someone post a comment blaming her death on the police for breaking off the pursuit. They do that for our safety, not to mitigate their risk...and statistics back that policy up. You stop chasing someone they usually slow down. It's a utter shame and we're heartbroken that this time it didn't work out that way. The blame for her death has to fall squarely on the shoulders of Mr. Mottley.” – John P Roberts III on Police: Suicidal Motorist Kills Reisterstown Woman, Hospitalizes Self in Crash Bel Air: “@BelAirPatch @HCPSchools this just makes no sense. All they do is watch movies the last 3 days anyway. #wastedtaxes” – …

I see people saying how frightening it will be when Robert Gladden is brought back to society in 35 years...has it downed on anyone that that day will probably never come? He is arrogant, like most his age; he will dive into the prison world thinking he will be safe because he's a kid. He's wrong. He will be attacked, harmed, and other things that aren't quite appropriate to mention. I don't have…   more ›

Shooter’s Family, Attorney Seek Leniency

The defense attorney argued that some good had come from the incident.

The attorney and family members of a boy who admitted to shooting a disabled schoolmate sought leniency on his part during a sentencing hearing Monday.    Robert Gladden Jr., 15, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder in Baltimore County Circuit Court last week. He is expected to be sentenced Monday afternoon for shooting 17-year-old Daniel Borowy on Aug. 27 in the Perry Hall High School cafeteria.  George Psoras, Robert Gladden's attorney, argued for leniency, describing his client as a child with a mental illness.  "He had the brain and aptitude of [Borowy]," Psoras said. The attorney also pointed that out his client is sentenced to prison that he would be the youngest inmate currently in the custody of the Department of …

School Staff Receiving Active Shooter Training

The Baltimore County Police Homeland Security section is providing the school system with training on what to be aware of in case of a school shooting.

The Baltimore County Police Department is collaborating with the school system to provide staff with more training in dealing with potential school shooting situations. The heightened concern comes after an attack at Perry Hall High School and a gun incident at Stemmers Run Middle School earlier in the school year. "We are working on making sure that the leadership of the schools, principals, fully understand our protocols," said Dale Rauenzahn, executive director of school safety and security. "We have trained for many years on the active shooter scenario." Baltimore County police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said situational awareness that leads to a school shooting scenario and response training is now available to administrators by the …

UPDATE (4:34 p.m.)—Adult charges will stand against the student accused of opening fire inside Perry Hall High School on the first day of school, Baltimore County Circuit Court Judge Robert Cahill, Jr. announced Friday morning. "The court can reasonably expect that if placed in treatment with juveniles, he would lack candor with therapists ... he would bully other juveniles ... he would act in a defiant, hostile and disinterested way," Cahill said.  "He is not the least bit interested in treatment and not the least bit motivated to change," he said. The announcement came at the close of a three-day juvenile waiver hearing, that had been postponed twice and stretched across two weeks. A criminal trial for 15-year-old Robert Gladden Jr. in …

Not really going to debate neither the guilt or innocence nor the psychiatric condition. But I am watching a video of his alleged confession right now. I'm wondering if it admissable. He was read his miranda rights and signed a document - probably not legally binding since he's under the age of majority. Furthermore, procedurally, it appears he is being questioned without his parent's permission …   more ›
