BCPS Cautions Against School Threat Rumors

Three county schools were investigated for potential threats Thursday.

Given two recent Baltimore County Public Schools gun incidents, school system officials aren't surprised the community is on edge. But they urge caution against taking stock in unsubstantiated rumors. "People need to be aware that we're aware of what's going on out there," said Charles Herndon, a school system spokesman. "We're living in the information age, so there's a lot of information out there but that doesn't mean all of it's accurate." As first reported by The Baltimore Sun, Lansdowne Middle School was evacuated for about 15 to 20 minutes Thursday morning following a bomb threat. Police investigated the threat after Lansdowne school staff notified the school's system main office. "We will take every threat seriously," Herndon said…

UPDATED (11:30 a.m.)—The teen accused in the August shooting at Perry Hall High School remains in jail following a bail review hearing. Robert W. Gladden Jr. will remain in jail until the release of a mental health evaluation in his case, Baltimore County Circuit Court Judge John Grason Turnbull III ruled Thursday. Gladden, 15, faces 29 criminal charges including attempted first-degree murder and assault related to the Aug. 27 shooting incident at Perry Hall High School. Columbia attorney Clarke Ahlers, who is representing Gladden, elaborated on the judge's decision. "The child, as you know, has been reported to be suicidal and we would need to know that or would have to take it into consideration," Ahlers said. Turnbull said the mental …

You are the "ignorant" person. Bobby was not being bullied, he was the bully. Bobby was also rude to people who tried to be nice to him. He has a long history of being a problem. The first shot was in fact not a warning shot and did hit Daniel in the back, other students would have been shot if it wasn't for Jesse Wasmer stopping Bobby. Get your facts straight before you mouth off and sound nasty…   more ›

After Gun Reported, Parents Take Stemmers Run Students Home

Parents of middle school students said they received little information from school officials about the incident.

A steady line of parents, many holding the hands of their pre-teen children, filed out of Stemmers Run Middle School in Essex late Tuesday morning. Police announced that the school was on lock-down after an eighth-grader brought a gun to school that morning. No one was injured during the incident, and officials said they do not plan to release further details until a 2 p.m. press briefing. Officials said the school day would go on as regularly scheduled. Still, anxious parents and TV news trucks gathered around the school's entrances. Vehicles crowded parking lots to the Mormon church and Save-A-Lot grocery store across Stemmers Run Road. Some ignored the growing media prescence, while others stopped to criticize school officials for not …

The safety of students is of paramount concern in these situations, whether real or practice. Does everything we do ensure no student will ever be harmed? Of course not. No drill or practice can prepare us for every situation. However, with drills and common sense, we WILL protect your child as if he/she was our own.   more ›

It even more disturbing that people fail to understand that this is a case with more than one victim. Your absolutely right. There were multiple opportunities to intervene in this case and prevent a young man from going down a road that would ruin his life. Have you forgotten HE IS FIFTEEN YEARS OLD. He may have had access to help, he may have had access to assistance as you put it, the reality …   more ›

Lawyer: Perry Hall Shooting Suspect Bullied, Intended No Harm

Robert W. Gladden Jr.'s attorney is challenging investigators' account of the Monday shooting.

The attorney representing Robert W. Gladden Jr.—the 15-year-old accused of shooting another student in Perry Hall High School Monday morning—is challenging investigators' narrative of the attack. George Psoras Jr., whose legal practice is based in Lutherville, claims that Gladden, a sophomore, was bullied and never intended to harm anyone when he brought a gun into the school's cafeteria, The Associated Press reports. Psoras said he believes Gladden shot into the floor, and then shot the gun again accidentally when teachers tried to wrestle it away, according to the report. "The stereotype right now is that we have a Columbine," Psoras told The Associated Press. "It's simply not the case. This is a typical teenager who was just starting …

Police: Bullying Not A Factor In Perry Hall High Shooting

Police revealed new details in the Monday morning shooting at Perry Hall High School.

UPDATE (1:20 p.m., Aug. 28)—Investigators do not believe bullying was a factor in the Monday morning shooting at Perry Hall High School, according to police. Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson, speaking at a news conference in Dundalk late Tuesday morning, dispelled rumors that bullying allegedly led Robert Gladden Jr., 15, to open fire on his classmates in the school cafeteria. Gladden's conversations with investigators have not indicated bullying was an issue in this case. The investigation is ongoing," Johnson said.
