President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. Marylanders appeared to agree with national pundits that Mitt Romney was forceful and persuasive in his debate with President Obama.

Mitt Romney in Virginia Hours After Picking Rep. Paul Ryan for VP

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney headed on a "blue state" tour after picking his running mate.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney headed for a campaign stop Saturday at Harris Pavilion in Manassas, VA, on a bus tour of "blue" states that did not include Maryland.  Romney announced Saturday morning in Norfolk that he selected Rep. Paul Ryan, R-WI, as his running mate. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell joined Romney and Ryan at the campaign stop at the USS Wisconsin, a retired battleship that is now a museum. Romney's tour stopped at Randolph-Macon college in Ashland, VA, and Manassas was to be his final bus stop on Saturday. The bus tour will continue on to North Carolina, Florida and Ohio Sunday through Tuesday. Virginia is considered a battleground state in the 2012 presidential election. POLL: Should Santorum Suspend His Campaign?

News reports are confirming Santorum’s exit from the presidential race.

Fox News and other outlets are reporting that former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is suspending his presidential campaign. CNN has reported that Santorum, who is trailing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in his home state of Pennsylvania, has canceled campaign events early this week while his 3-year-old daughter, who has the chromosomal condition known as Trisomy 18, is hospitalized. Mitt Romney won the Republican primary in Maryland on April 3, beating Santorum, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich. The Huffington Post reports that “Santorum's decision removes any lingering doubt that Romney will end up the Republican presidential nominee."
