State officials released tips for avoiding cold-related illnesses, following a hypothermia-related death in Frederick County earlier this month.
State health officials on Thursday confirmed Maryland's first hypothermia-related death of the winter, and took the opportunity to remind residents how to protect themselves. State officials said the death of a Frederick County man aged 65 or older was confirmed sometime between Dec. 18 and 24. The release said no further information on the man would be released for privacy reasons. Four children from the Baltimore metropolitan area are the first recorded flu cases for 2012.
Four Baltimore-area children are the first confirmed cases of seasonal influenza, according to state health officials. The four children, who are not being identified, are said to be doing well though one was hospitalized, according to a statement released Friday by the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The first confirmed case in 2011 was reported on December 30, health officials said. "Flu is here earlier this year than last year, and we are seeing two different flu strains,” Frances Phillips, deputy secretary of Public Health Services, said in the statement. “This really stresses the importance of getting the flu vaccine, and getting it as soon as possible. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is investigating the cosmetic surgery center over three serious infections linked to liposuction.
The Timonium Monarch Med Spa has been shut down by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene after three cosmetic surgery patients received serious infections. One of three individuals diagnosed with the Streptococcus (GAS) infection after receiving liposuction has died, according to a release issued Wednesday afternoon. The other two patients were hospitalized. State health officials report a total of 25 cases this year, all in adults.
State health officials are reporting the second death related to West Nile Virus in Maryland. Because of privacy laws, there is no additional information about the unidentified adult. Officials with the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene report that 25 cases of the virus have been confirmed in Maryland in 13 counties. All of the cases involve adults, according to a statement released by the department. This is the second death in Maryland in two weeks attributed to the mosquito-borne disease. Baltimore County Officials began a spraying program in neighborhoods on the west side of the county last week. A second round of spraying is scheduled for Sept. 13. Maryland reports 13 cases of the mosquito-borne virus so far in 2012.
One Maryland resident has died as a result of West Nile Virus, according to state health department officials. Dori Henry, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Thursday confirmed the death of one adult. The age, gender and county where the victim lived are not being released because of privacy reasons, Henry said. So far, Maryland has reported 13 cases of the virus this year. Nearly 1,600 cases have been reported in 48 states. About 70 percent of those cases come from Texas, South Dakota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Michigan—45 percent along were in Texas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
