Boys Hoops: Strong Third Quarter Propels New Town Over Western Tech

Titans gear up defensively, outscore Wolverines 14-4 in third frame to take home Class 1A North title.

This time last year, New Town’s Jalen Clarke, stood in an Owings Mills High School hallway, lamenting what could have been. The Titans were one crucial call away from advancing to the state semifinals in College Park for the first time since 2007. However, Saturday afternoon at Western Tech, Clarke’s—and New Town’s—post game mood was the polar opposite of last year’s. Netting a game-high 27 points, Clarke helped lead a second half surge that saw the Titans come out completely revitalized on defense en route to a 62-57 victory to secure the Class 1A North championship. Senior forward Devron Goodwyn tallied 14 points and sophomore point guard Danny Shand added 13 to go along with eight rebounds and four assists. The Titans will take on the …

Western Tech Fends Off Late Run, KOs New Town in Region Final

The Wolverines staved off a frenetic second half spurt to top the Titans in Friday's Class 1A North Championship.

After a sluggish first half and a 14-point deficit midway through the third quarter, New Town found themselves amid a potential milestone comeback with about 70 seconds play in Friday’s region championship at Western Tech.  Trailing by five, Sydney Hines sliced through the defense, connected on an off-balanced runner and was fouled to pull the Titans within one score at 39-36. However, before New Town could even think about getting a crucial defensive stop on the other end, Western Tech’s Deja Dennis grabbed Hines’ missed free throw and—rather than slow up the pace to take time off the clock—kicked it into full gear. The seldom used freshman raced the length of the court and sank a layup while absorbing a reach-in foul from New Town’s …

Minus Coach Mohler, Comets Pull Away From Woodlawn, 59-40

With the head coach unable to make it until halftime, assistant Al Fultz lead a pressuring zone defense that helped put the game away early.

Catonsville may not have had fiery head coach Mike Mohler for the first 16 minutes against Woodlawn Tuesday night, but with the amount of pressure the Comets poured on and the layups and free throws that came as a result, they did just fine without him. Playing under assistant coach Al Fultz, Catonsville racked up 14 steals before intermission, and, after narrowly trailing at the end of the first frame, outscored the visiting Warriors 20-6 in the second quarter—a period that included 14 unanswered Comets points. When Mohler returned from a work obligation at halftime, Catonsville put it in cruise control and coasted to a 59-40 victory to cap off a 16-win (and only three loss) regular season. “It’s great. He’s there every day so it’s not …

Comets Seniors Rise to the Occasion, Dismiss Hereford, 86-75

Zack Hall, DJ Kearney Jr. and Jason Harris combine for 61 points as Catonsville tallies 56 in the second half to pull away from visiting Hereford on Senior Night.

In a game where Catonsville honored seven seniors prior to tipoff, it seemed like every single one of them made a strong contribution Wednesday night in the Comets regular season finale against Hereford. Zack Hall netted a game-high 24 points and fellow senior DJ Kearney Jr. added 20 more as the Comets poured in 56 second half points en route to an 86-75 victory against the visiting Bulls. “Of course it’s good to get a ‘W’, [but] it’s really good to get a ‘W’ on senior night,” Catonsville coach Brian Barber said. “It’s a testament to these guys. We got seven [seniors] and everyone one of them played a huge part in tonight’s game in some way. It feels good.” The pack of seniors made an impact outside of just the scoring. Guard-forward Jamal…

Franklin's Walsh Shines in Senior Night Win Over Catonsville

The senior forward finishes with 29 points and 16 boards to lead the Indians fourth quarter comeback in 66-64 win over the visiting Comets.

With the overall game Joe Walsh turned in Wednesday evening against Catonsville, it was fitting that the ball would be in his hands with just under 11 seconds to play and the score tied at 64. The Franklin senior, who netted a game-high 29 points to go along with 16 rebounds, set a pick for point guard Greg Ramsey just underneath the three-point arc. As Ramsey darted toward the hoop, both Comets defenders trailed along with him and when his fellow senior flipped him back the ball, Walsh had plenty of room to bury a 16-foot jumper with one second to play. “Joe had been hot all game so we knew to go right to him,” said Ramsey, who added 16 points and four assists—including the game winning pass. “I told coach to run power, that’s our play …

Boys Basketball: Strong First Quarter Propels Owings Mills Past Western Tech

Eagles remain unbeaten in county play by outscoring the visiting Wolverines 16-4 in the opening frame.

Not having played a game in 11 days, Owings Mills head coach Richard Epps worried before the game that his habitually slow starting team would open up sluggish against a quick and athletic Western Tech squad. Eight minutes into the game it appeared as though his apprehensions were a bit misplaced as his squad outscored the Wolverines 16-4 in the first quarter and allowed only seven made field goals in the first half en route to a 53-42 victory. “This game actually scared me because I didn’t know what kind of energy we would come out with,” Epps said. “Coming off of a loss, this is one of those games that if we play it wrong we could lose it. They played us even but we had the quick start so that’s what kind of balanced us out. “As long as …

Girls Basketball: Comets Capture Sloppy Win Over Kenwood

Catonsville gets 22 points from Zoey Whittington, ends first half on a 12-1 run to put away visiting Bluebirds.

If you combine the first, third and fourth quarters Monday night, Catonsville only outscored a pesky Kenwood bunch by 11 points. However, unfortunately for the Bluebirds, the game consists of four total quarters, and it was during the second quarter—one in which the Comets outscored Kenwood 20-6—that Catonsville was able to flip the switch and pull away for a 59-34 win. The Comets (13-4) have now outscored their opponents 119-59 over their last two contests. Senior Zoey Whittington finished with a game-high 22 points and sophomore Deb Milani chipped in with ten as Catonsville closed out the second frame on a 12-1 spurt to take a comfortable 21-point lead heading into the break—a margin that would shrink to no less than 16 for the remainder…

A Few Notes from Around Western Baltimore County

Owings Mills boys look to rebound from first two losses of the season, Catonsville girls no longer control their own destiny and factors behind Franklin boys resurgence.

Anybody else sick and tired of snow yet? I know I am. I’ve already started looking at homes in Arizona—not really, I care about Patch sports far too much to even consider leaving Baltimore County! (Although I am going on a cruise toward the end of February.) Travel plans aside, the mid-week onslaught of snowfall has allotted me the free time to take a look back at the past couple of weeks of basketball action and highlight a few newsworthy happenings from around Western Baltimore County.   15th Annual Basketball Academy Unkind to Owings Mills Prior to last weekend, the Eagles were unbeaten at 13-0 and had gained some well deserved respect in the metro area by climbing into the Baltimore Sun poll at No. 15. After leaving Coppin State (the …

Comets Take Out Their Frustrations in Win Over Perry Hall

Desperately looking to avenge last week's defeat at the hands of Dulaney, Catonsville explodes on a 20-0 run in the first half and breezes by visiting Gators.

It didn’t matter who was shooting, who was passing or who was handling the ball for Catonsville Saturday night—the Comets were clicking on all cylinders en route to a 60-25 thumping of Perry Hall. Even if the Comets made a rare mistake, things just seemed to work out. For example, when senior Zoey Whittington’s corner three-pointer came up well short of the rim, sophomore Deb Milani was positioned perfectly under the hoop, camped out and ready to put back the miss. Whittington, who finished with a game-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds, sparked her offense in a first half where the Comets (12-4) took a 4-4 tie two minutes into the first quarter and turned it in to a 24-4 advantage before the Gators’ (9-7) Cassidy Keller hit a …

Patch Sports' Up and Comers

A few of the area's top rising stars who deserve some special praise.

In my final “installment” of local basketball players who deserve a few paragraphs of recognition in this space, I’m going to focus on some of the budding stars on teams I cover for Patch. Players that have yet to reach their full potential, but have certainly shown some glimpses as to what they’re capable of on the court.  In addition to this column, I encourage you to look back at past entries featuring my top performers and dirty work players—let me know what you think. Here are a few of the athletes you can expect to hear from as playoff time approaches and in the seasons to follow: Kyle Thomas, forward, Owings Mills When writing these columns, I like to confer with coaches to see who they think fits the billings of the type of player …
