Sesame Workshop officials say they don't want anything to distract from the mission and message of the educational show, Sesame Street.
Turner Station native Kevin Clash has resigned from Sesame Street, bringing to an end his long tenure as the voice, personality and heart of the iconic muppet Elmo. His resignation comes in the aftermath of allegations that he had an underage sexual relationship with Sheldon Stephens, who initially claimed the relationship occurred when he was just 16. Sesame Workshop issued the following statement on its blog: Sesame Workshop’s mission is to harness the educational power of media to help all children the world over reach their highest potential. The Dundalk High School graduate stands accused of sexual impropriety.
Turner Station native Kevin Clash, the puppeteer who has endeared himself to countless children as the voice of Sesame Street muppet Elmo, has taken a leave of absence from his job amid allegations of sexual impropriety. The Dundalk High School graduate, long a supporter of philanthropic efforts in his hometown, stands accused of having sex with a then-16-year-old boy, according to TMZ. The reports says the unidentified accuser, now 23, claims that he and Clash had a sexual relationship when he was 16 and Clash was 45. Clash reportedly admitted to TMZ that he did have a sexual relationship with his accuser, but only after the man turned 18. Film is playing through Thursday at the Charles Theater in Baltimore.
Longtime Baltimore-area residents probably know that the voice of the puppet Elmo is that of Dundalk native Kevin Clash. They may have even met Clash or seen him perform as the famous puppet on Sesame Street, as Clash still makes many appearances in the area. But what people may not know is that Catonsville plays a role in the documentary film on Kevin Clash called "Being Elmo" that was released in theaters recently. The film has received numerous film festival awards and is showing at the Charles Theater in Baltimore through Thursday. Clash, whose daughter attended Catonsville High School, still has family in the Baltimore area.
