Hillcrest Elementary Raises $40,000 in Race for Education

The school will use the money to update its technology.

After a successful wellness program was started in the fall, faculty at Hillcrest Elementary decided to add a fundraising component. And it really paid off.

Students raised more than $40,000 by participating in the Race for Education, Hillcrest speech pathologist Kelley Shaw said.

“We’ve had an incredible effort,” she said.

In the fall, the school started a pumpkin run and students train in various exercises. Since March, that program has been raising money for the school.

The school plans to use the money to new laptops; with a limited budget, the school is lacking is some of the latest technology, Shaw said.

“We’re entering into this age where being digital and having wireless access is very important and we don’t have that here,” she said. She also anticipates future curricula going digital.

It wasn’t just the school that supported the effort.

“We’re so appreciative of everyone’s support,” Shaw said. “Lots of sponsors with families, friends and doctors. A lot of sponsors.”
