UMBC Athletics' Week in Review (9/17-9/23)

A review of the week that was in UMBC Retriever Athletics.

The Retriever men's soccer team (4-2-2) won a pair of games last week, coming up with a 2-0 win over Loyola and a 2-1 victory at George Washington.

Against Loyola, JR M Kadeem Dacres and JR F Pete Caringi III scored goals in a six-minute span early in the second half and JR G Phil Saunders preserved the shutout by stopping a penalty kick with seven minutes remaining as the host Retrievers blanked Loyola, 2-0, before 1,319 fans at Retriever Soccer Park on Sept. 19.

On Saturday at GW, UMBC erased an early 1-0 deficit, scored twice in a five-minute span, and finished strong to defeat the host Colonials, 2-1, at GW Soccer Field.

SR M Milo Kapor was named America East Conference Player of the Week and to College Soccer News’ Team of the Week for games ending Sept. 23. Kapor now has two goals and eight assists on the season, contributing on all 10 of the Retrievers’ goals through eight games. He has moved into a tie for tenth place on UMBC’s all-time assist list with 18.

The women’s soccer team and volleyball team lost conference openers over the weekend. Leslie Wray’s squad got a second half game-tying goal from Amy Savage, but host New Hampshire responded with a  late penalty kick score to prevail, 2-1 on Sunday. Ian Blanchard’s team fell at Binghamton, 3-0. Both teams open home league play this weekend- volleyball hosts New Hampshire on Friday evening and Providence on Sunday afternoon, while soccer welcomes Maine for a Sunday matinee.

Kristy Kaemmerlen – daughter of former UMBC softball assistant coach Dave Witten – will join the UMBC softball coaching staff, as announced by head coach Joe French on Tuesday. Kaemmerlen will serve as a part-time pitching coach for the Retrievers during the 2013 season.
