UMBC Athletics' Week in Review (10/15/-10/21)

The men's soccer team, men's swimming and diving team and volleyball team had outstanding weeks for UMBC Athletics.

In UMBC volleyball action, senior Katie Kelly  and sophomore Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) each recorded a career-high in kills, while junior Emily Vandegrift  was also in double-digits as the UMBC volleyball team downed Binghamton 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 20-25, 25-18), Friday night in America East action at the RAC Arena.

With the win, UMBC moves to 11-13 overall this season with a 4-3 mark in conference play while Binghamton falls to 7-16 overall and 4-3 in the league.

Kelly’s 14 kills broke her previous career-best of nine which she set against UC-Riverside last season, while Schmidt’s 19 winners bested her high of 18 set against Fairleigh Dickinson which also occurred in 2011.

UMBC won its third in a row and improved to 8-4-4 overall and 2-2-1 in league play. Stony Brook slipped to 9-4-1 and 3-2-0 in America East.

“We’re very excited; it was a big win over the defending champions,” head coach Pete Caringi said. “Credit the players, they demonstrated great composure and played a solid 90-minute game.”

The Retrievers had defeated Navy, 2-1, in Annapolis on Oct. 16.

The Retrievers will play the final two America East games of the season at Retriever Soccer Park, hosting Hartford on Oct. 24 and Binghamton on Oct. 27. Seniors Milo Kapor, Liam Paddock and Dave Vaeth will be honored before Saturday evening’s game.

In the pool, the 400-yd. free relay team of sophomore Lauri Kaei , junior Evan Carey, and seniors Steve Gallagher and Mohamed Hussein won going away to clinch the meet victory as the UMBC men’s swimming and diving team downed Navy, 156-144, Friday evening at the UMBC Aquatic Complex. The UMBC women’s team lost a close decision to the Mids, falling 164-136, despite freshman Corinna Darelius  sweeping the diving events.

The men’s win was the first for the UMBC swimming and diving programs over the U.S. Naval Academy since the women defeated the Mids on Oct. 29, 2005 and the first for the men since winning by one point, 122-121, in 2004.

“I am so proud of our teams tonight,” said head coach Chad Cradock. “We knew it was going to be a fight and be close all the way until the end because it always is with Navy. I’m so excited for our teams for the win and the effort and I hope we can keep the momentum rolling.”

The UMBC men’s lacrosse team has selected seniors Scott Jones, Neill Lewnes, and Ethan Murphy as its captains for the 2012-13 academic year.

“Strong leadership is an essential ingredient to the success of any team and being elected as captain by your peers is a tribute to a person's strong character and commitment,” head coach Don Zimmerman said. “Our staff is excited to have Scott Jones, Neill Lewnes and Ethan Murphy serve as this year's tri-captains and are confident that together they will make the most out of this incredible opportunity."
