Who will be named Teacher of the Year?

The Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the finalists in the 2014 Outstanding Teacher Awards program. Recognizing the devotion to excellence that makes our schools among the finest in the country, awards will be given to outstanding teachers at the elementary, middle and high school levels. There are also special awards for distinguished service to our schools and for educational teams who have banded together to “make a difference” in their schools. Sponsors CCBC Catonsville, Charlestown Retirement Community, Huntington Learning Center, Patient First, Senator Edward Kasemeyer, Coldwell Banker Catonsville and McDonald’s Catonsville make it possible to celebrate the amazing educators of our community with cash and technology prizes for use the in classroom.

Eighteen private and public schools participated in this year’s award program, naming finalists from among the educators nominated by the community and from within the school system. Among the elementary schools, the following teachers were selected as finalists to compete for “Outstanding Teacher of the Year” honors:  for Catonsville Elementary, Rebekah Kaufman; for Hillcrest Elementary, Debra Sugarman; for Johnnycake Elementary,  Elizabeth Carman;  for The Lamb of God School,  Catherine Sullivan; for Our Lady of Victory School, Milana Marksamer; for St. Agnes Catholic School,  Virginia Peters; for Westchester Elementary,  Sue Schepp; for Westowne Elementary,  (William) Josh Willig; and for Woodbridge Elementary,  Margie Herbert.

In the Middle School category, the finalist from Arbutus Middle School is Michael Guarraia; the finalist for Catonsville Middle School is Christina Kidd; and the finalist for St. Mark School is Terry Ferro.

Our high schools named the following six candidates as finalists to vie for Outstanding Teacher of the Year: from The Catonsville Center for Alternative Studies, Shawn Krause; from Catonsville High School, Geri Hastings; from Mount de Sales Academy, Anne Printz; from Mount Saint Joseph High School, George Kapusinski; from Seton Keough High School, Karen Montoya; and from Western School of Technology, Patrick Dobmeier.

The finalists for the Distinguished Service Award are Michael Salisbury from Catonsville Middle School and Alysia Kuntaraf from St. Mark School. In the Teams the Make a Difference category, finalists include the Fourth Grade Team at Woodbridge Elementary and the Catonsville Scholars Program at Catonsville Middle School.  All finalist nominations are now under review by a special education committee which will choose the winners in each category.

The community is invited to join the Chamber in saluting all educators nominated for an award this year at the Outstanding Teacher Awards banquet on Thursday, April 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the John Erickson Conference Center at Charlestown. Dr. Barbara McGraw Edmondson, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, will offer the keynote address.  This is an occasion to celebrate the qualities that make Catonsville such a wonderful place to live and learn, so all urged to come out and show support for our educators.
