Nominations Needed for Teachers Awards

Have you noticed an outstanding teacher or education team in a Catonsville school? Nominate her, him or them for the Outstanding Teacher Awards program.

The Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Outstanding Teacher Awards program to recognize the effort, innovation and teamwork that go into making our schools such vibrant and supportive places to learn. Twenty-one elementary, middle and high schools in the Catonsville area are eligible to participate in the program, including both public and private schools (see list below).

Awards fall into two main categories: outstanding teachers, and individuals and groups who support education with dedicated service and teamwork.

Winners in the first category, the Outstanding Teachers and Teacher of the Year, are drawn from the teaching staff of the 21 participating schools. Winners in the second category, with awards for “Distinguished Service” and “Teams That Make a Difference,” may be teachers but may also be anyone who makes a significant contribution to the educational system, such as members of a school’s support staff or a civic organization that furthers educational goals. All members of the community are eligible to nominate a teacher or educational team for an award.

After nominations for individual teachers and teams have been submitted to the Chamber, the nominations are forwarded to the principal of each school. Principals select one Finalist from their schools for each award, and each Finalist receives an award certificate and complimentary invitation to the awards dinner.

Then the nominations of each Finalist are reviewed by the Education Committee at the Chamber and one overall winner in each grade level (elementary, middle and high school) is selected as Teacher of the Year. The Committee also selects the winners of the Teams That Make a Difference Award and the Distinguished Service Award.

Nominations for this year’s awards will be open until February 15, 2014 and anyone in the community is entitled to nominate a teacher or other individual or organization. Nomination forms are available online at http://catonsville.org/events/teacherawards.php or by calling the Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce at 410-719-9609.

Finalists and Award Winners will be honored at an Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 10 at the John Erickson Conference Center at Charlestown Retirement Community.
