UMBC Swimmer Wins Award; Team Earns National Ranking
UMBC's Mohamed Hussein was named Division I Swimmer-of-the-Week, and the Retrievers earned national Top 25 rankings for the first time ever—for men and women.
The UMBC swimming program truly is on a roll this week.
The school announced that Junior Mohamed Hussein was named the National Collegiate Division I Swimmer-of-the-Week by CollegeSwimming.com on Tuesday.
This came right after UMBC's men were ranked No. 18 nationally, and the women earned a No. 23 ranking in the CollegeSwimming.com polls, thanks to strong performances in the America East conference meet last weekend.

This is the first time in school history the Retrievers have been ranked nationally, and Hussein became the first UMBC swimmer to get his honor.
All of this came after the school fared well at last weekend's America East championships. The men won the conference title for the ninth time in 10 years while the women took second place.

Hussein was named the Most Outstanding Male Swimmer for the second consecutive year at the America East Championships.
“Mohamed has proven himself in the pool time after time, especially this last weekend,” said UMBC coach Chad Cradock in a statement from the school. “He embodies everything that we want in a student-athlete.”
At the America East Championships, Hussein won three individual events and helped UMBC take three relay championships. The Retrievers snapped 10 pool records in the competition held at Maine and also broke five school, four meet and three conference records.
