Live Blog Recap: UMBC Men's Lacrosse Loses to Hopkins

Teams played in downtown Baltimore at M&T Bank Stadium

BALTIMORE -- A hoarse Don Zimmerman confirmed what most realized after watching UMBC lose to Johns Hopkins 16-5 at M&T Bank Stadium: the game was a rout.

"They (the Blue Jays) took it to us in every facet of the game," Zimmerman said. "I wasn't happy with the way we played defense ...

"Hopkins made us look silly."

The Retrievers were bested in shots (44-30), ground balls (39-24) and, perhaps most glaringly, face-offs (winning 5 of 25).

Often after UMBC scored, a quick face-off loss would lead to momentum-killing Blue Jays goal.

"It takes all that momentum you just got, and you lose it," Zimmerman said.

The Retrievers went to using two longstick midfielders at the wing for face-offs in the second half, trying to win better than the 5 of 14 they did in the first half, but the experiment failed, as UMBC went 0 for 11 in face-offs in the third and fourth quarter.

Hopkins outshot the Retrievers 15-3 in the decisive third quarter, scoring four goals and putting the Blue Jays ahead 13-4.

Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Cohen, making his first start this season, made 11 saves.

"He just needs more help," Zimmerman said. Defenders were often "confused" and were failing to slide to the ball, playing "selfish," he said.

Offensively, Zimmerman said his team was "spooked" after Hopkins goalkeeper Pierce Bassett made two good saves in the first quarter.

"There wasn't a whole lot of encouragement in that locker room," Zimmerman said. "This is unacceptable."

(UPDATED 6:32 p.m.)

UMBC has lost to Johns Hopkins 16-5 at M&T Bank Stadium at the Face-Off Classic.

The Retrievers scored only two goals in the second half, after going into halftime down six, 9-3.

We're heading down to field level to get reaction from UMBC coach Don Zimmerman and players.

(UPDATED 6:26 p.m.)

Midfielder Dan Brown scored UMBC's first goal of the fourth quarter, making the score 16-5.

Brown scored with the Retrievers playing with an extra-man after a Hopkins penalty.

There are under two minutes to play at M&T Bank Stadium.

(UPDATED 6:19 p.m.)

With 6:08 remaining, Hopkins leads UMBC 16-4.

The most recent Blue Jays score came off the stick of sophomore midfielder Lee Coppersmith, who darted through the Retrievers defense and easily scored.

Before that, freshman attack Kevin Interlocchio scored off sophomore John Greeley's assist.

UMBC coach Don Zimmerman's demeanor tells the story of the day for the Retrievers; he's standing on the sideline with hands on hips.

(UPDATED 6:02 p.m.)

UMBC scored only one goal in the third quarter, coming with 1:14 remaining.

But it was a nifty play, as Jamie Kimbles picked up a groundball around midfield and passed the ball off to his right to a streaking Joe Lustgarten near the crease.

Lustgarten quickly loaded and bounced a shot past Hopkins keeper Pierce Bassett.
The Retrievers still trail, 13-4, heading into the final quarter.

(UPDATE 5:57 p.m.)

Hopkins' Chris Boland is filling up the stat sheet at M&T Bank Stadium.
The senior attackman, off a Zach Palmer assist, scored his fourth goal of the game to give the Blue Jays a 12-3 lead.

Boland quickly lost a UMBC defender after receiving Palmer's feed, and was one-on-one within five yards of Retrievers goalkeeper Adam Cohen
Cohen didn't stand much of a chance.

(UPDATE 5:51 p.m.)

With 8:06 to play in the third quarter, Zach Palmer just gave Hopkins an 11-3 lead, and the rout may be on at M&T Bank Stadium.

Palmer was assisted on the play by John Ranagan, who also has two goals.

With 9:02 to play in the third quarter, Hopkins has made it to double-digits when Blue Jays attack Chris Boland scored his third goal of the game, giving Hopkins a 10-3 lead over UMBC.

(UPDATE HALFTIME)

UMBC finished the first half by missing its last eight shots and Hopkins leads 9-3.

Hopkins midfielder John Ranagan scored with 4:11 remaining in the the second quarter, after taking the ball the length of the field and uncorking a strong shot past Cohen at eye-level.

Eleven seconds later, Blue Jays attackman Kyle Wharton scored another goal while being knocked down from behind in the crease by a UMBC defender to give the Blue Jays a six-goal lead.

Face-offs have been a problem for the Retrievers, as Hopkins has won 9 of 14. The Blue Jays have outshot UMBC 21-16 and hold a 20-14 edge in ground balls.

(UPDATE 5:17 p.m.)

Even when he wins, UMBC goalkeeper Adam Cohen cannot win.

After stopping a Hopkins shot, the ball ricocheted away from the sophomore. Apparently thinking the ball had gone behind him, Cohen turned his back to the field.

But the ball had bounced right to midfielder Mark Goodrich, who took one step and quickly flipped the ball into goal, giving the Blue Jays a 7-3 lead with just over six minutes to play in the second quarter.

(UPDATE 5:12 p.m.)

Each time UMBC has scored, Hopkins has responded quickly, killing any chance of a Retriever run.

With 10:48 remaining in the second quarter, Rob Grimm scored to bring UMBC back within three, 5-2.

But Hopkins attackman Zach Palmer scored just seconds later after the Blue Jays won the face-off to re-up the Blue Jays' lead to four, 6-2.

With 11:47 remaining in the second quarter, Chris Boland had scored his second goal of the game and gave Hopkins a 5-1 lead.

(UPDATE 4:59  p.m.)

UMBC got on the board with just over a minute remaining in the first period, but Hopkins midfielder John Ranagan snatched back any momentum the Retrievers thought they might have gained seconds later, cutting fast to the goal and scoring to give the Blue Jays a 4-1 lead after winning a face-off following UMBC's score.

Scott Hopmann had just got the Retrievers on the board with only 1:10 remaining in the first period.

About nine yards from goal, Hopmann rocketed a low shot that appeared to bounce before squirting past the Blue Jays' goalkeeper.

At the end of one period, Hopkins leads 4-1.

(UPDATE 4:53 p.m.)

With just under five minutes remaining in the first period, Hopkins leads 3-0.

Chris Boland struck with 5:16 remaining for the Blue Jays, who have been outwitting UMBC sophomore keeper Adam Cohen, making his first start.

After receiving a pass from midfielder John Ranagan, Boland faked shooting twice before drawing Cohen too far to his right. Boland's shot got past Cohen to his left.
Rob Guida scored with 10 minutes remaining in the period for the Blue Jay's other goal.

(UPDATE 4:38 p.m.)

Five seconds in, Hopkins already has a lead.

Attackman Kyle Wharton assisted, by Chris Boland, scored after the Blue Jays won the face-off. The Blue Jays lead 1-0.

(4:34 p.m.)

We’re live from M&T Bank Stadium, where UMBC is about to play No. 17 Johns Hopkins University in the Face-Off Classic.

The Retrievers (1-2) are limping into the contest, having lost 13-9 to No. 10 North Carolina last weekend and being drubbed by Rutgers 12-5 the game before.

Junior goalkeeper Brian McCullough started both of those games for UMBC, and the team’s season-opening win over Presbyterian, but broke his thumb in the loss to the Tar Heels.

Sophomore Adam Cohen is warming up in the net, and will be receiving his first start since making eight last season for the Retrievers.

McCullough had allowed 11.6 goals per game and has stopped only 43.1 percent of shots. In 30 minutes of action, Cohen has allowed six goals and has saved only 40 percent of shots.

But UMBC may be meeting The Blue Jays (4-1) at the right time.  On March 5 versus No. 7 Princeton, Hopkins scored only three goals and lost 8-3 at home. The Blue Jays found some offense in a game March 9 versus Manhattan, and won 10-3.
