In a battle of two squads coming off of uplifting wins over private school teams in their season openers, Catonsville simply made more plays in the second half to upend an unrelenting Perry Hall squad that fought until the final seconds.
Behind the dynamic duo of quarterback Aaron Jones and tight end Julian Jones, which connected for a score in each half, and an interception return touchdown from Joe Tebo, the Comets were able to overcome a strong effort from Gators running back Eric Latham (three touchdowns) and earn a 32-23 home victory.
Deadlocked at 13 to start the second half, Tebo put a quick end to Perry Hall’s opening drive, jumping a route in the middle of the field and taking the ball 70 yards to the house to put the Comets up 19-13.
The Gators wasted no time in responding, as after a steady drive, Latham’s third score (and a converted extra point) put Perry Hall ahead by one.
It took just one Catonsville play on offense to answer right back, as Aaron Jones hit Julian Jones on a play action pass for 66 yards and the tandem’s fourth touchdown hookup of the season to go ahead 25-20.
After a 45-yard Jake McQuay field goal cut the Comets’ advantage to from five to two, Catonsville running back Josh Hylton made it a two-score game when his 12-yard touchdown run capped off a nine-play drive and kicker Eric Medinger followed through with the extra point.
With only a few minutes in the fourth quarter remaining, Perry Hall drove all the way to the Comets’ 10-yard line, but were turned over on downs to end any chance of a late comeback.
Catonsville will look to remain undefeated at Woodlawn, while Perry Hall attempts to rebound when it returns home to take on Towson. Both games are Friday at 7 p.m.
