Comets Savor Senior Night, Thump Milford Mill, 48-7

Behind four total touchdowns from DeAndre' Lane and two scoring connections between Aaron Jones and Deniko Carter, Catonsville sprinted out to a 42-0 halftime lead over the Millers.

During the first half of Friday’s contest against Milford Mill Academy, Catonsville provided visual proof of what it means to be clicking on all cylinders.

After averaging just over 36 points per game in seven prior wins this season, the Comets eclipsed that mark in the first two quarters, needing only 23 offensive plays to hang 35 points on a visably frustrated Millers defense that surrendered over 300 total yards before intermission.

Meanwhile, the Catonsville defense confined Milford Mill to just five first downs and, ahead 35-0 with less than a minute to play in the second quarter, DeAndre’ Lane’s 90-yard interception return earned the Comets a 42-0 halftime lead en route to a 48-7 victory on Senior Night.

Offensively, Lane carried nine times for 107 yards and three touchdowns, while wide receiver Deniko Carter hooked up on two scores through the air with fellow senior Aaron Jones.

“It feels good,” said Carter, who went out in style with his 27 senior teammates. (Although a potential home playoff game could return those seniors to Comets Stadium in November.)

“I give a lot of shout-outs to my team and my defense, especially. Everybody is staying in their position and doing what they got to do. We put everything together like a puzzle and 48-7 was the outcome—can’t get better than that. It’s the last home game. I’m proud of my team.”

The effort continued in the second half where, amid a running clock, the Comets second-string defense, which played all of the final two quarters, forced the Millers (4-4) to run 14 plays over 18 minutes of game time before surrendering its first points of the contest.

With Catonsville (8-0) having scored over 300 points this year, it’s sometimes easy to forget about a defense that’s been equally important. The Comets have allowed just under 12 points per game.

“I think our defense, we have a mindset of being first,” said cornerback Josh Frazier, who delivered a key open field block on Lane’s interception return score.

“That’s what we want to be everyday, all the time. I think the most important thing about our defense is that we are more determined than other teams are.”

Early on in the first quarter, it was Carter who exemplified determination—along with a prime demonstration of leaping ability—at a key moment in the game.

With the Millers in search of a defensive stand on 4th-and-10 from their own 23 (trailing only 7-0 at the time), the lanky wide out ascended overtop a defender in the back of the end zone to haul in a lofted pass from Jones.

Two possessions later, on top 21-0, Jones (4 of 6 for 130 yards) made it a little easier on his wide out by delivering arguably his prettiest ball of the season. Carter, running a post-corner pattern, turned to find the pass smack-dab in his chest for a picturesque 58-yard catch-and-run touchdown.

While those two passes earned Jones his 13th passing, and Carter his 7th receiving, touchdowns of the seasons, Lane’s scoring runs of 20, 3 and 3 yards give him a team-high 10 rushing TDs on the year.

And, with backup fullback Devin Ray’s 26-yard rushing touchdown to cap off the scoring, 11 different Comets have crossed the end zone in 2011.

“As a team we’re always a family,” Frazier said. “No matter what comes our way, we can always take it as a family and be a family.”
