Whiz Kid: Western Tech Senior a Presidential Scholar Finalist

Halethorpe resident is at the top of his class.

Name: Osman Y. Ulug of Halethorpe

Grade: Senior at Western School of Technology

Accomplishment: Osman was one of two Baltimore County Public Schools students selected as a candidate for the 2011 Presidential Scholars Program. Roughly 3,000 students across the nation are selected for this honor.

Osman has a 4.0 GPA and is ranked first in his class out of 219 students. By the end of his junior year, he had scored a 5 on six Advanced Placement exams and is currently taking five AP courses.

He interned at Johns Hopkins Hospital, completed an internship at Johns Hopkins Material Research Science and Engineering Center and is president of the National Honor Society. Osman is also involved in various clubs at school, including the Green Club and the school's Envirothon team.

The 500 semifinalists will be announced in April, with the finalists selected in early May.

Osman was honored at the March 8 meeting of the Baltimore County Board of Education.
