The National Achievement Scholarship Program, an academic competition established to honor Black American high school students, recognized three Western Tech students: Bitsiti Hagos, Kamsi O. Odinammadu and Brianna S. Reed.

These students were among 4,700 high school seniors whose 2011 qualifying test scores ranked among the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 Black Americans who requested entry into the progam.

On Oct. 12-13 students from the Culinary Arts Program catered for the Catonsville Kennel Club’s Annual Dog Show, hosted at the Howard County Fairgrounds.

Sophomore Grace Spencer participated in a mission trip to South Africa, travelling to Pretoria and Johannesburg. During the trip sponsored by her church, Grace joined members of the congregation to visit a high school, an elementary school and an orphanage. The group donated eighty uniforms, computers and a copying machine to the elementary school. Grace also helped deliver duffel bags full of clothes, shoes, books, toiletries, games, snacks, and school supplies to the orphanage.

Although the bulk of the trip was devoted to mission work, Grace was able to visit the homes of South African heroes Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu. Grace also visited the Apartheid Museum and The Voortrekker monument.

These students are nominated and selected by ninth grade trachers for performing well academically and following the CPR2—the school code of Courteous, Punctual, Respectful and Responsible—in all of their classes and in the hallways.
