In its latest rankings of graduate programs, U.S. News and World Report gave Johns Hopkins University top honors for its education program.

It was for the first time Hopkins secured the number-one spot for its graduate program in education, which was ranked second last year and sixth in 2012, according to The Hub, one of the university's news publications.

The top five in this year's list—the 2015 Best Education Schools—included Johns Hopkins, followed by Vanderbilt, Harvard, Stanford and University of Pennsylvania. More than 180 schools were ranked.

The magazine evaluated education programs for quality, based on feedback from school district superintendents and university deans; selectivity, gauged by GRE scores and acceptance rates; faculty resources, determined by student-to-faculty ratio and faculty awards; and research expenditures, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Founded in 1909 as "College Courses for Teachers," the Johns Hopkins education program changed its name to the Johns Hopkins School of Education in 2007.

It includes the Center for Research and Reform in Education, the Center for Social Organization of Schools and the Center for Technology in Education as well as a Division of Public Safety Leadership.

U.S. News
specifically mentioned the "groundbreaking work" of the school's Center for Data-Driven Reform in Education, which developed the Best Evidence Encyclopedia, an online handbook detailing programs available for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

The medical school at Johns Hopkins was ranked third, after Harvard and Stanford.
