Paving Project at Catonsville Elementary School Will Improve Arrival and Dismissal Process

The $605,00 project will be finished by the start of the school year.

After years of waiting, Catonsville Elementary School will finally have a new parking lot and reconfigured bus loop and driveway on the property in time for the start of the school year.

In the spring, parents heard that the project was delayed, but by the end of the school year the project had been by the Baltimore County Board of Education.

The $605,000 project included repaving the bus loop on Frederick Road, repaving the back parking lot, expanding the back parking lot, and installing new curbs and ramps on the sidewalks.

The expanded parking area on the back and side of the building will be the new spot for parents dropping off or picking up their children before and after school. The new space is clearly marked with signs that say "student drop zone."

A total of 30 parking spaces were also added to the back of the school. Contractors will also add more lighting to the parking lot.

In the past, a makeshift area with less space was what the school used for arrival and dismissal, said Principal Linda Miller.

"It'll take everybody getting used to it, but once everybody gets into the routine it'll be fine," Miller said Monday while giving a tour of the property.

Crews are nearly done with the work and will be just about finished when teachers return next week.

The new arrival/dismissal spot will also be safe for students, as they are now able to be dropped off from the passenger side of the car, and there will be more space for cars. Cars will still enter the loop from Bishops Lane and exit on Frederick Road.

A map of the new zone will be sent home to parents this week, Miller said.

"This is much safer for everybody," she said.
