Moms Talk: What are you Doing for Spring Break?

Share your thoughts and ideas of how you're surviving the week.

Growing up, Spring Break was usually pretty chill for me.  I did have friends who traveled and came back tan, but I rarely traveled myself.  My grandparents were snowbirds, so we sometimes went down to Florida during Christmas break or President’s week (we had this off growing up in New York City).  And, by 'we,' I mean my sister and I.  My parents did not take this trip with us.

My parents taught public school for a combined 60 years or so.  Summers were spent in camps where my dad worked, and Christmas, president's and spring breaks were used for them for much-needed and deserved recuperation.

We were fortunate enough, though, to have plenty of friends who did not travel, and the NYC subway system at our disposal.  From a young age we were independently and reliably transporting ourselves to and from the great activities in and around town.

Now, with my own kids for Spring Break, I am letting them chill.  At least one of the breaks always involves travelling to New York to see family, and I like the kids to not have much to do during the other.  Down time, reading, TV and outside are the rules for this Spring Break.

On Tuesday we went to the American Visionary Art Museum and we’re going to see Cirque du Soleil’s Totem on Saturday.  Otherwise, pretty low key, and I’m enjoying not having to get the kids anywhere at early o’clock.

(I have always thought that having “Turn off the TV” week during Spring Break was unspeakably cruel.  I like much better the way Catonsville Elementary School does it – while school is in session, and offering alternatives in the evenings.  Not that I’ve ever done “Turn off the TV” week, but that’s besides the actual point.)
