Flames Engulf UMD's Iconic Bronze Testudo Mascot

When their beloved mascot went up in flames, students took to social media.

Colleges are known for their traditions, and the University of Maryland at College Park is no different, with its bronze statue of mascot Testudo the Terrapin sitting on McKeldin Mall and serving as a lucky charm for students, particularly around exam time.

Students rub his nose, worn shiny as a result, and leave him offerings—candy, money and other treats—in an attempt to barter with the gods for good grades.

But something went awry early Wednesday, when authorities found the 1,000 pound statue and its offerings engulfed in flames, reported The Baltimore Sun

UMD students took to social media, as reported by Sports Illustrated Campus Union, posting photos of the flaming amphibian and expressing concern.

University of Maryland police were unable to determine the cause of the fire, according to The Baltimore Sun, but University President Wallace Loh assured students on Twitter Wednesday that their beloved turtle was unharmed.

"I am happy to report that there was no damage to Testudo in front of McKeldin. Testudo is ready to continue supporting our #UMD community!" tweeted Loh.

Students responded by posting photos on Twitter of a bandaged Testudo, complete with a Neosporin offering, and other tributes lain by students still hoping for passing grades.
