The Bible in English: Tyndale and His Followers and Imitators

Save the date!

We're happy to announce the upcoming visit of the Very Reverend Dr. Iain R. Torrance.

Dr. Torrance, president and professor of patristics at Princeton Theological Seminary, will present on the history and background of the King James Bible, which celebrated its 400th birthday last year. Shortly after inheriting the English throne and uniting the kingdoms of Scotland and England, James VI of Scotland and I of England authorized a new translation of the Bible from Hebrew to Greek. Begun in 1604 and published in 1611, the KJV became England's Authorized Version of the Bible. Since then, millions of Christians have lived out their faith through its words.

His address focuses on the context and history of the translation of the Bible into English and helps us to understand its challenges and what an achievement the Authorized Version was.

Dr. Torrance has degrees in philosophy, New Testament languages and literature, and a doctorate in early Christianity. With an English mother and an education at an English boarding school, he was brought up with the Authorized Version and has always been fascinated by Bible translation. Dr. Torrance is former Moderator of the Church of Scotland and chaplain-in-ordinary to Queen Elizabeth II.

Dr. Torrance will also preach at CPC on Sunday, March 18.
