Thoughts on “Aging in Place”

Many homeowners have opted for modifications like improving entry ways, building ramps, easy access showers and cabinets, adjusting counter heights and installing more effective lighting.

These days, there’s a lot of conversation around the topic of “aging in place“, so we wanted to discuss the subject a bit.

The National Association of Home Builders describes aging place as: “Remaining in one’s home safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level. It means the pleasure of living in a familiar environment throughout one’s maturing years, and the ability to enjoy the familiar daily rituals and the special events that enrich all our lives. It means the reassurance of being able to call a house a ‘home’ for a lifetime.”

Perhaps this description resonates with you, a family member or a friend. For us, it very much rings true, as many area clients have worked with us to create more comfortable “aging in place.” A current Coastal Builders’ project for a two-story addition includes the installation of a pneumatic elevator. Currently, both husband and wife are capable of going up and down stairs, but they anticipate this task will become more difficult, so they’ve included an elevator to create ease of movement between floors.
