PEP Talk with Delegate Nic Kipke

Should we require photo ID at the polls? Better question is why don't we? Delegate Kipke has introduced legislation that would do just that.

By Hillary Pennington

Last night, I was buying a cute dress for an upcoming event and the attendent asked me for my ID when I went to use my credit card.  This is normal, right?  We're all used to it. But at the polls? Nope, it's not required.

How is it that we have to show our driver's license to do just about anything, except to elect the very people who make decisions that directly impact our everyday lives?

My biggest question is why?  Why not ask for ID at the polls?  If transparent, fair elections is of the utmost importance to our elected officials, then why not require ID?  You'd think it was the simplest way to verify a person's identity.

In a world where voter fraud runs rampant, where people have little faith in our electoral system, where over a million dead people vote each cycle, you'd think this would be a bigger issue than it is.

Tonight at 8 pm on Purple Elephant Politics Radio, we're going to be talking with Delegate Nic Kipke who has introduced legislation that would deal with this issue once and for all.  HB113, being heard today in Annapolis, would require an election judge to establish a voter's identity by asking for an approved form of identification, be it a driver's license, birth certificate, or passport.
