Timeline of Frederick Road Bridge Project through the Spring

State Highway Administration says the project is still on track to be completed in the fall of 2013.

Construction equipment around the Frederick Road bridge over Interstate 695 has been commonplace for about six months now, as work crews rebuild the 55-year-old bridge.

Recently, crews have started to widen the bridge, which includes widening the sidewalks on the south side of the bridge. The sidewalks on the north side of the bridge are closed.

State Highway Administration official recently provided a timeline of major milestones coming up in the project:

May: The eastbound and westbound ramps to the inner loop of the Beltway will be temporarily closed so crews can reconstruct the ramp, which will be moved a few feet in the bridge reconstruction. The ramp is expected to be closed overnight.

June: After crews finish work in the inner loop ramps, they will move to the outer loop, where the ramp is expected to close temporarily for about a two weeks. The detour will take drivers off the Beltway at Wilkens Avenue and then back onto the inner loop to access Frederick Road from the other side.

Summer: After work on the ramps is completed, crews will shift traffic to the new bridge and start demolition on the old one.

The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2013.

The project is expected to cost roughly $20 million. The new bridge will also include upgrades such as wider sidewalks, double turn lanes, bicycle lanes, ramp realignments and a new signal system to improve traffic flow at the interchange.

The ramps to the Beltway inner loop will be shifted roughly 100-150 feet to the west and the new ramp will be higher to meet the new bridge elevation.

The ramps on the other side of the bridge closer to downtown Catonsville will also be raised in height and one side will be widened.

Other enhancements associated with the project include installing traffic signals at the entrance and exit ramps of Edmondson Avenue, a new median on Interstate 695 and new pavement on Interstate 695.

Crews continue to work on the Wilkens Avenue interchange and  on the bridge are expected this week.
