Police Warn Public About Phony Health Inspectors

Scammers seek to obtain private information from businesses, according to police

The Baltimore County Police Department and the Department of Environmental Protection and Resource Management are warning area businesses to be wary of individuals posing as health department inspectors.

There have been reports of persons calling businesses identifying themselves as local health inspectors, according to a statement released by police.

The callers attempt to schedule emergency inspections in order to gain access to the business. Police believe the callers are attempting to obtain sensitive business information, according to the statement.

County police issued the following reminders:

  • The county does not call restaurants and businesses to schedule emergency inspections.
  • Health inspectors carry county identification that includes a photograph as well as a Department of Environmental Protection and Resource Management badge. The badges never include an identification number.
  • Inspectors never ask for or accept money for an inspection.
  • Do not give any private business information to anyone over the phone.
  • Anyone with questions regarding inspectors or inspection procedures can call DEPRM at 410-887-4065.

Police are asking business owners to call 410-307-2020 if they think they have been contacted by someone representing themselves as a health inspector.
