Lansdowne Middle Receives Open Space Grant

The money will fund lighting upgrades on the school's fields.

Landsdowne Middle School was one of five recipients of state funds Wednesday under Program Open Space.

Maryland's Board of Public Works approved $590,100 in funds for a project there and four others in Baltimore, Frederick and Howard counties.

“It is essential that we continue to provide safe, accessible outdoor spaces for our families to enjoy,” Lt. Gov.Anthony G. Brown said in a news release. “When young people have opportunities to play and learn outdoors, they develop an appreciation for their natural world and a desire to care for it.”

The Program Open Space approval will fund lighting upgrades on Lansdowne's fields to meet safety standards, according to state officials. The new lights will cover four baseball diamonds and two athletic fields. The new lights are described as energy-efficient, with glare control devices and steps taken to cut light pollution.

Also among Wednesday's Open Space approvals, Sparrows Point High School was given $413,700 for energy-efficient field lighting at the school's stadium. Read the full list on the state's website.
