City Donates Maple Avenue Land to County

Land will be preserved for open space.

The Baltimore County Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to accept 11 acres of land as a donation from Baltimore city, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The 11 acres of land are on Maple Avenue south of Frederick Road. The deal was orchestrated in part by Neighborspace of Baltimore County, a nonprofit that works acquire land for the purpose of open space.

It has not been decided what the land will be used for, but the land will stay open either as a park, a garden or a natural area.

Barbara Hopkins, executive director of Neighborspace, said the land that they help preserve are usually not turned into recreation fields.

"Most of it is passive," she said. "Open space is really at a premium."

The land had been owned by Baltimore city since the 1920s but for years the city didn't realize it, Hopkins said. The land is valued at $110,000.
