Teen in Catonsville Home Where Officer was Shot is Charged

Baltimore County police have made an arrest after gunfire at a Catonsville home Wednesday killed a police officer and one other.

A 17-year-old who was found inside the Catonsville home where Baltimore County police were serving a warrant Wednesday morning has been charged as an adult with firearm violations, according to police.

Taquan Barney, of the unit block of Shipley Avenue, was arrested inside the home on Roberts Avenue, after an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the deaths of Officer Jason Schneider and suspect Tevon Smith.

While searching Barney officers found a loaded .22 caliber handgun in his front pants pocket. Police said they are tracing the handgun and another firearm.

Smith, 25, is the only person believed to have shot Schneider, police said. The four other individuals inside the home at the time of the warrant service were reportedly detained, interviewed and released. Police said no one fled the home.

Police were serving a warrant in connection with a shooting that took place on nearby Winters Lane on Aug. 19. County sources familiar with the investigation say that the suspect in that shooting, a 16-year-old male, was not in the Roberts Avenue home Wednesday morning.

Barney is currently being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
