Forty-Six High School Students to Receive Combined $224,750 in Scholarships from Charlestown Residents

Forty-six high school students from Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Howard County will receive scholarships to help them attend college at a Thursday, June 27, ceremony at Charlestown retirement community in Catonsville, where they have worked part-time. They will receive a combined total of $224,750 raised by Charlestown residents during the past two months to show their appreciation of the students’ work and to help assist them financially in their post-secondary education.

These students work for at least two years during which time they are trained, mentored, and cared for by the 2,300 Charlestown residents who become surrogate grandparents to them.

Not only do students receive scholarships at the end of their tenure at Charlestown but residents build relationships with them, ask them about school, and encourage them to keep working hard.

Residents are good role models for the young adults and serve as examples for what a good education can do for one’s life.

More than $1.5 million in scholarship monies since 1988 has been awarded to students who work part-time at Charlestown, which is managed by Erickson Living.
