Arbutus Middle, Catonsville Elementary Honored as Maryland Green Schools

They're among six schools to receive the honor for the first time. A Windsor Mill school was among those that were recertified.

Catonsville Elementary and Arbutus Middle schools have been named Maryland Green Schools.

This is the first time they have received the honor, given by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education, according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools.

The Maryland Green Schools Program encourages schools to teach about the environment through classroom lessons and outdoor activities.

Four other Baltimore County schools received the honor for the first time: Elmwood and West Towson elementary schools, Halstead Academy and Sparrows Point High, the release states.

Windsor Mill Middle School was among the schools given a recertification, which is required only every four years, it states.

The others that were recertified are: Cromwell Valley Elementary Magnet; Glyndon, Pinewood, Stoneleigh, Timonium and Westowne elementary schools, and Hereford High School, the release states.

Schools were judged on the following, according to the release:

  • School profile
  • Top-five environmental accomplishments
  • A list of celebrations and professional development focusing on the environment
  • How management works to maintain health in a variety of environments
  • Partnerships with the community

The association works with the Maryland State Department of Education to honor green schools. Since 1977, they've honored 454 schools, the release states.
