Comment: ‘Decrease my taxes, legislators. Then … get involved with parenting.’

Baltimore County readers weigh in on the news of the week.

Readers took their opinions to Baltimore County Patch sites this week, flocking most to stories about Republican candidate Rick Santorum’s comments about college and “snobs,” whether and if parents should get a . Below are a selection of some the week’s most noteworthy comments.

Poll: Are College Degrees for ‘Snobs?’ “Going to college is not just about getting a job. Higher education should be available to everyone who is capable of learning and should not be dependent on class, background or ability to pay. Education can make life more fulfilling in many ways in addition to getting a job and can help an individual make better personal and political decisions. We need to make it possible for each person to achieve his or her potential.” - Luaine Carey

BGE Shifts Focus to Butler Road for New Substation "Baltimore County's Department of Public Works could certainly learn much from BGE. To their credit, BGE took into consideration the intrusiveness and impact a substation would have on a residential community close to the proposed site. DPW has NOT taken into the consideration the negative impact and intrusiveness a water tower would have on the communities surrounding Timber Grove Road. Shame on DPW! Perhaps DPW could take some online classes from BGE re: selecting sites for the impending water tower." - Bonnie Levitt

“I agree, the cars, trucks and buses on Edmondson Avenue are more a nuisance than the planes. The cars and the city buses constantly exceed the speed limit, definitely the city bus, which sounds like a jet airplane.” – David Cummings

"The bottom line is, if as a parent you really want to or need to meet with your child/childrens' teachers, you will certainly work out a time convenient for both parties, as should the teacher(s) involved. I definitely do not feel that the legislators need any reason to get involved with mandating specific dates/times for parent conferences as a law or otherwise, giving parents a day off to do so. Would all those parents attend conferences scheduled then on those dates? Or just enjoy the day off designated for parent conference day? Fix the budget and decrease my taxes legislators - then you can get involved with parenting rules {which really aren't your concerns}.” – Sharon Stanton
