A Sweet Business

There's sweetness in the air

It's not all that unusual in 2012 to have a woman own and operate a business.  But they are still minority business owners. Lucky (yes that's her name) Thompson wants to change that. In May of 2012, after a short run in Harbor East, she opened The Best of Luck at 601 East Pratt, a location that was vacant for two years since the ESPN Zone moved out. Phillips didn't need it, so here came Lucky who remodeled the space. This is your basic candy store where many adults could spend half a day.

It was her childhood dream to open her own business, especially an old fashioned candy store. Many of her products reflect that old time feeling with items such as salt water taffy, Bit O'Honey, Mary Janes and Pez. The summer saw visits by mostly tourists, but from here on out, it's the locals she hopes will keep the business flourishing.

Lucky wanted to be part of the action downtown and with a harbor location she certainly is. Her previous experience was in marketing in New York. The Best of Luck is actually a family affair. Her husband, a business banker for M & T, helps as does her mother Suzy Cordish who handles the buying.  Suzy happens to be married to David, owner of the Power Plant and Md. Live Casino.

Hours are Monday - Saturday 11 to 9 and Sunday 12 to 8.  The store can accommodate small parties, they do cater, delivery within 10 miles and the candy can be shipped anywhere. To order candy call 410-752-2500 or go to thebestofluck.com.
