Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen of Verona at UMBC

UMBC takes a turn re-shaping this 17th century play, and Proteus, Valentine, Sylvia and Julia are as hip as ever.

UMBC takes a turn re-shaping this 16th century play, and Proteus, Valentine, Sylvia and Julia are as hip as ever.

UMBC's Department of Theatre welcomes you to their new home in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building (PAHB) with their latest production, Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen of Verona. The play, adapted and directed by Department of Theatre assistant professor Eve Muson, will be staged Friday-Sunday, April 19-21 and Thursday-Saturday, April 25-27.

These performances, the first Theatre production in UMBC's PAHB Theatre, highlight the depth and nuance not only Theatre program, but of UMBC's arts programming in general. A truly interdisciplinary event, the Two Gentlemen of Verona takes advantage of UMBC's innovative visual artists, musicians and dancers to give the play a fresh, punchy make-over. A clean, modern set transforms with projected imagery; actors become crooners, guitarists and backup singers; characters do the Twist, the Monkey and shimmy. A rendition of the play to remember, the production reminds us that classic Shakespeare themes -- focused on identity, love, fidelity and adolescence -- are timeless, and the lessons, endlessly applicable.
