Why Does Catonsville Need a Cooperative Market?

Recently, I had a conversation about Catonsville Cooperative Market with a friend.

Recently, I had a conversation about Catonsville Cooperative Market with a friend. He played devil’s advocate by asking, “What would make a co-op attractive to someone who doesn’t care about local, organic produce?” It was a good point. When you’re so focused on a given effort, it’s easy to forget that not everyone has the same drive to buy vegetables grown without pesticides, or to support the Maryland farmer. Below are some responses to questions that some Catonsville residents might have about why a co-op would appeal to them.

What will be different about the produce at the co-op? Can’t I just go to my local grocery store and get the same thing?

-          Seasonal produce will be fresher, and therefore will be of higher quality. It won’t have to travel long distances, which means that it will maintain higher integrity; it will be closer to its fresh-from-the-garden state.

Why would I want to shop in a smaller space with fewer products?

-          One of the benefits of shopping at a co-op, which may start small and then grow, is that its employees are familiar with the products the store carries. They can answer your questions about them and suggest other similar products to you as well.

-          Convenience! Currently, grocery options are lacking in downtown Catonsville. Complementing the already successful farmers’ markets, we can bring products closer to you.

What will you offer that my local grocery store does not?

-          Firstly, Catonsville Cooperative Market will provide many products that your local grocery store does not. From a variety of local produce to household goods, you will be able to find things there that will not be as available elsewhere in Catonsville. Additionally, the co-op will support community-building activities and educational workshops to strengthen the bonds of Catonsville residents. We are made up of individuals who care deeply about Catonsville (many of us live in your community!), so the market and the member-owners have Catonsville’s best interest at heart. Together, we can all be Catonsville small business owners.

Our hope is that Catonsville Cooperative Market will provide a unique shopping experience for members and non-members alike. A pleasant atmosphere is our aim. We invite you to ask questions- tons of questions- so that we can address any concerns or curiosities (just e-mail us at catonsvillemarket@gmail.com!). We also invite you to become a founding member by visiting our website: www.catonsvillecooperativemarket.com .

It would be wonderful to have this type of shopping option in Catonsville -- especially in downtown Catonsville -- that one could go to everyday if desired. I'd love to hear more about the educational workshops. Do you have some topics in mind?

The idea would be to have a variety of workshops based on our owner-members' interests. These could include cooking classes, environmental education sessions, or nutrition sessions. Anything people come up with!

Why does the Ellicott City zip code go into Oella?
Steve Schreiner June 19, 2013 at 04:34 pm
My understanding is that Ellicott City was once (over 100 years ago) an incorporated township andRead More included Oella. Its post office included Oella and that portion within the now 21043 zip code.
