SCOTT DORSEY OF MERRITT PROPERTIES NAMED WINNER OF NAIOP MARYLAND LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Baltimore, MD (March 27, 2014) – Scott E. Dorsey, Chairman and CEO of Merritt Properties, LLC, has been named winner of the 2014 NAIOP Maryland “Lifetime Achievement Award” and will be honored at the commercial real estate organization’s bi-annual Awards of Excellence Gala on April 24. NAIOP Maryland is comprised of more than 370 professionals working for real estate development companies, brokerage firms and affiliated companies such as financial institutions, brokerage firms, architects and engineers.             Dorsey began his commercial real estate career with Merritt Properties in 1972 and has occupied nearly every position within the company. In his current role, he oversees the day-to-day operations of the Baltimore-based company that owns and manages more than 16 million square feet of commercial real estate properties, valued at more than $1.6 billion, with a focus on strategic planning.  With more than 70 different locations, Merritt Properties is recognized as among the largest privately-held real estate companies of its kind in the greater Baltimore-Washington, D.C. region.

            Dorsey is the second Merritt Properties executive to win this award, which is presented every other year by NAIOP Maryland to honor significant accomplishments in and contributions to the Maryland marketplace over an extended career. Company founder Leroy Merritt received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. Past winners include Rand Griffin and Dwight Taylor of Corporate Office Properties Trust; David Bavar of Bavar Properties Group; Harold and Bernard Manekin of Manekin, LLC; Ed St. John of St. John Properties and Clay Emory of Emory Hill Companies.

            “Throughout my more than forty-year career, while experiencing all the highs and lows associated with the local commercial real estate industry, I always kept in mind Leroy Merritt’s philosophy regarding the critical importance of forming strong relationships with vendors, tenants and people we interact with on a day-to-day basis,” explained Scott Dorsey. “Making money or finishing on top with a lease negotiation is not the most important thing. Rather, it is treating people fairly and with respect and forging strong bonds that encourages future and positive business transactions.” 

            Mr. Dorsey serves on the board of directors for numerous organizations and corporations throughout the Maryland region including the Maryland Economic Development Corporation, Maryland Business for Responsive Government, Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore and Young Life-Urban Council. He also sits on the M&T Bank Greater Baltimore/Washington Directors Advisory Council, the Baltimore County Economic Development Commission and the Board of Trustees for Junior Achievement of Central Maryland.  

            Last year, NAIOP Maryland was recognized as the 2013 NAIOP “National Chapter of the Year.”
