CATONSVILLE, MD (September 19, 2013) -- Bert Clegern, coach of the Charlestown Sluggers resident softball team, today picked the Baltimore Orioles to be an AL Wild Card team. He did so at Fruits of Our Labor, an event in which 70 resident-led groups at the retirement community displayed their projects.
The Orioles, according to Clegern, are playing their best baseball under extreme pressure in the final weeks of the season. “They are resilient,” he said, adding he thinks Matt Wieters and Chris Davis will make key contributions in the playoff run.
“They are an exciting team to follow,” said Clegern, a former U.S. Air Force biologist and adjunct professor of environmental science. “They are always competitive.”

The Charlestown Sluggers play games on a baseball field located in front of Our Lady of the Angels Chapel on the Charlestown campus. The 12-member team is known for “small ball,” a style of play that puts runners in scoring position more often than not. The Charlestown Sluggers scrimmage from April-June and also play in an annual summer regional tournament.
