Owners of Catonsville's Taneytown Deli Open Yogurt Shop in Elkridge

The frozen yogurt store has seen a steady stream of customers since its Sept. 22 opening.

Michelle Han and her husband live within minutes of their newest creation: Yogopop.

The Elkridge residents are no strangers to restaurants—they own the Taneytown Deli in Catonsville and Hunt Valley.

“We were selling frozen yogurt in the deli and it did pretty good, so we said, ‘Maybe we could open a frozen yogurt shop,'” explained Han. “It’s getting so popular now.”

Yogopop, at the edge of the Meadowridge shopping plaza (6010 Meadowridge Drive), is within minutes of the Hans' home, in a spot they thought would be popular too.

“We know this area so much, and we know how nice a neighborhood this is,” said Han, who opened the store on Sept. 22.

Bright colors, self-serve yogurt machines, do-it-yourself topping stations and yogurt priced by weight echo the setup at , which recently set up shop in Ellicott City, but Han said that was not the model for Yogopop in Elkridge.

“In New York and L.A., there are so many places ... like Pinkberry and Yogurtland and Red Mango," said Han, who explained that she and her husband searched for inspiration from yogurt giants nationwide.

Han said that her store's selling point is not just taste but healthfulness.

"There’s a lot of live cultures in it; we put nonfat real yogurt in there," sad Han. "It tastes almost the same as ice cream but there's less sugar, low fat—some of it is nonfat—and there's no cholesterol. It's good for you."

At Yogopop, the chocolate and vanilla flavors are lactose-free. All flavors are low sugar and safe for diabetics, said Han. Every other week, the store plans to change its selection, which Han said includes more than 100 flavors.

Already, others want in on Yogopop. “We are trying to do it as a franchise," said Han. "There’s a lot of business owners who are interested in getting this name."

For now, Han and her husband are enjoying the short commute and steady stream of customers waiting to try the trendy treat off Meadowridge Road.

Said Han: "We are just so excited to open up a frozen yogurt shop around here.”

Yogopop (6010 Meadowridge Center Dr.) is open Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
