Catonsville Sunday Farmers Market Closes for the Season

First-time market is rated a success by residents, vendors

For years, the Farmers Market on Bloomsbury Avenue has had a loyal following. But many Catonsville residents were unable to make the Wednesday morning market, which led the Chamber of Commerce to look into a weekend one.

And today as the last Sunday Farmers Market of the season came to a close, vendors and residents called the market a success.

"Everybody says they are coming back," said Danae McDevitt, the organizer of the market.

The chamber-sponsored market started in May with 13 vendors and was up to 21 during the busy summer months. One weekend they had 200 bags to give away and gave them all out early in the market's hours, McDevitt said.

Organizers still hope to expand next year to add a few more vendors to complement the ones that are already there. They also found the later start time was a draw for some people, as the downtown Baltimore Sunday Farmers Market closes at 12 p.m. Catonsville's ran from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Catonsville native Janet Streit, one of the farmers who runs White Rose Farm in Taneytown, said her farm saw a huge benefit to being there.

"This is a well-managed market," she said. "It had good promotion and a good mix of people."
