BGE to Start Second Phase of Catonsville Gas Pipe Replacements

BGE will replace old cast-iron and steel pipes as part of an ongoing program launched in 2010.

Baltimore Gas and Electric officials Tuesday announced plans to begin the second phase of an effort to replace natural gas lines in Catonsville.

Called Operation Pipeline, it's BGE's ongoing efforts to replace aged cast-iron and steel pipes. Catonsville is entering the second of its three-phase gas pipe overhaul, according to BGE's website. Officials announced Tuesday that a similar project will be getting underway in Arbutus.

“Through Operation Pipeline, BGE is making an investment to upgrade gas equipment that is approaching the end of useful service,” Jeannette M. Mills, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE, said in a press release. “This program is part of BGE’s continuing commitment to providing safe and reliable energy systems, and by taking this  proactive approach, customers benefit from a more efficient and cost-effective way to maintain infrastructure.”

Since the program started in 2010, crews have replaced nearly 40 miles of pipeline throughout the utility's service area, according to the release.
