This weekend kicks off one of the most anticipated events of the year—the 4th of July Celebration! The chairs are set out, the flags are waving and now you're just waiting for the Fourth of July extravaganza to commence. While you wait, we have some great ideas of how you can spend the weekend leading up to the big event.

Why Go: There are many reasons to enjoy a snowball or ice cream on a hot summer day, but this Friday, you'll have even more reasons. All day, Opie's will donate a portion of sales and tips to Catonsville Celebration Committee. Plus, you can pick up a fourth of July teeshirt while you're there. You'll be ready to enjoy the parade in style.

Where/When: Friday, 6:30 p.m., Egges Lane and Frederick Road
Why Go: After Opie's, head on over to the corner of Egges Lane and Frederick Road, to hear the wildly popular Appaloosa play. You'll want to get their early, because the word on the street is the crowd will be even bigger than last year.

Where/When: Saturday, 1 p.m., Benjamin Banneker Historical Park
Why Go: The first in this summer series of nature events at Banneker Park is going to be a fun one. The Maryland Zoo presents Living Places, Living Planet. It's an interactive program that allows you to travel the world to see the many habitats that wild animals call home.

Where/When: Saturday, 6:00 pm, Lurman Woodland Theatre
Why Go: You deserve to treat yourself to a summer evening spent listening to funk, soul, rock, and blues.

Where/When: Sunday, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 730 Frederick Road
Why Go: You'll need to prepare for the parties and BBQs the next day. Load up on Bison burgers, steaks, chicken, produce, pickels and fresh salsa. Go early and treat yourself to a waffle or hit the market around lunch time for some authentic Thai food. It's a win-win anytime you go.
