"Las Meninas"

Opening on November 10th and running through November 21st is "Las Meninas" by Lynn Nottage, a noted African-American playwright who has won both a MacArthur "Genius Grant" and a Pulitzer. The production is directed by Eve Muson, who recently joined our faculty.

This is an interesting play, filled with dark humor, that touches on history, race relations, issues of gender, people forgotten from memory, and has as its main characters people who are trapped in impossible situations.

Set in the glittering court of Louis XIV, Las Meninas tells the true story of the seduction of Queen Marie-Thérèse, and the consequences of her scandalous affair with Nabo Sensugali, her African servant. Irreverent and ironic, Las Meninas shines a fiercely imaginative beam on a fascinating but forgotten bit of history that reveals contemporary truths about the racial divide.
