Battle of the Bands, Mardis Gras Deliciousness and Rock Legends: Patch Features the Best in Local Arts

Everything from rock 'n roll to shrimp balls on Mardi Gras occupied Patch arts coverage in the past week.

A battle of the bands in Eldersburg was transformative for more than its music, there’s more to Mardis Gras than shiny beads, and award-winning dancing—all this and more are getting our creative juices flowing. Patch elevates daily life in these parts to an art form, so indulge your inner snob with the following Week in Regional Arts.

It was a scene to warm every Dead Head’s heart—groupies hanging out, the crowd holding cell phones aloft, audience members clapping over their heads. But it was all good clean fun—a rock ‘n roll spoof that had a middle school principal jammin’ like a rock star. See the crowd going wild on Catonsville Patch.

The American Legion Hall in Taneytown was transformed into a concert venue but this battle of the bands did more than entertain. It raised money for the Alexis Ross Organization and juvenile diabetes. Take a listen and have your own rockin’ good time on Eldersburg Patch

Those Mardis Gras parades and parties can be so exhausting. All those feathers and glitter, bead-tossing and champagne toasts. For sustenance, try Louisiana native Maranda Trahan’s recipe for shrimp boulettes (pronounced “boo-lets”). C’est delicieux is how they say it on Owings Mills Patch.

We humans are always pushing our limits. If you’ve ever run a marathon or tried to beat your friends at burrito-eating, you know what we mean. Some in the music world have created their own special challenge—write nearly a year’s worth of material in a single month. Our author records what it was like to compete at that level, on Columbia Patch.

Mastery is one thing, but accomplishing it with grace and beauty on a stage at age 12, is another. The Columbia-based Arabesque Dance Studio put forth a series of award-winning performances that puts them in line for national competition.  Columbia Patch was there.
