Wednesday Farmers Market in Catonsville Starts 10th Season

Market on Bloomsbury Avenue opened Wednesday.

The Wednesday Farmers Market in Catonsville stared its 10th season on May 2, setting up shop in a parking lot off of Bloomsbury Avenue.

The market, which features a small group of area farmers and specialty vendors, moved from the Social Security Administration complex in Woodlawn after security concerns following the Sept. 11 attacks.

The vendors are in the new re-surfaced parking lot at the intersection of Bloomsbury Avenue and Magruder Avenue. Last year, the space was used for construction equipment for the resurfacing of Bloomsbury Avenue, which was completed late last summer.

Farmers said that they are happy to be back for this season now that the construction is complete, as parking and access to the market is now easier.

"This is our first market and we've really had a great turnout so far," said Janelle Vane with Wilson's Farm Market in Bel Air.

The farms include Wilson's Farm Market, Glenville Hollow Farms in Pennsylvania and Swamp Fox Farms in Pennsylvania. Other vendors include , Neopol Savory Smokery and Kite Hill Farms.

Organizers hope to add a honey vendor in mid-June. For a full list of vendors, see the website.

The opening day's offerings included plants, flowers and vegetables, such as asparagus. Farmers said that despite the warm spring, local strawberries are still about two weeks out.

Cindy Yingling, who runs Glenville Hollow Farms, said she is looking forward to the weather becoming more consistent.

"We started out warm, then dry, then cold, so it messed up some of the spring stuff," she said. "The blueberries are really upset. "
