Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Baltimore County

Watch is in effect until 10 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of central Maryland until 10 p.m. The watch is in effect for Baltimore County and surrounding areas.

What's the difference between a thunderstorm and a severe thunderstorm? The latter brings with it not just thunder, lightning and rain, but a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph and or hail at least 3/4 of an inch in diameter.

NWS issues a severe thunderstorm watch when "conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area."
