Schools Close Early, County Encourages People to Visit Cooling Centers

The heat advisory remains in effect.

Schools and government officials are reacting to the excessive heat that is expected to persist throughout the day.

Baltimore County Schools are closing three hours early due to the heat. In Catonsville, Mount De Sales Academy is closing early today as well as Wednesday. All afternoon and evening activities are canceled, except for graduation ceremonies for the following schools: Franklin High School, George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology and Randallstown High School.

The last time schools closed early due to excessive heat was Sept. 1, 2010. School officials said that the early dismissal today does not affect the final day of school, which is still June 17.

Baltimore County government is also encouraging people to visit public libraries or senior centers. The is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and the is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to anyone regardless of age.

  • Never leave a child or pet in an unattended car
  • Check on elderly or chronically ill family members, friends and neighbors.
  • Stay hydrated with water or fruit juices. Also provide your pet with plenty of water and sheltering.
  • Limit outdoor activity when the temperatures and humidity are extremely high.
  • Use sunscreen and reapply often when spending time outdoors.
