Newspaper Boxes in Front of Post Office Removed

Crews with Maryland State Highway removed them early Thursday morning after someone pushed them into the road.

The roughly 15 newspaper boxes that have been outside of the Catonsville Post Office were removed Thursday morning, after they were moved onto Frederick Road.

The colorful plastic and metal boxes, many of which were empty or not used or regularly stocked with newspapers, had been called an eyesore by some residents.

Recently the grounds of the post office have been been with new trees and flowers.

Catonsville resident Jim Himel told Patch this week that he had been asking state and county officials to remove the boxes.

David Buck, a spokesman with Maryland State Highway Administration, said the boxes as they were on the sidewalk are not in the right-of-way of the state road.

But once the boxes ended up on Frederick Road, they were in the right-of-way, causing crews to remove them, Buck said.

Buck said any of the boxes that weren't claimed will go back along Frederick Road after the Fourth of July parade next week.

Last year after chairs were vandalized before the Fourth of July leaving pieces of plastic chairs littering Frederick Road, state highway crews also removed the debris that was on the roadway.

Chairs being set up on the sidewalk are not in state highway's right-of-way, Buck said.
